The Bloomberg News station said in a recent report that, until recently, the abundance of oil and gas at cheap or supported prices has made solar energy a less economical option, as for now, their lower prices would enhance the expansion of water desalination via solar energy, as well as lead to a decrease in Water price.
Despite the seemingly abundant water in the GCC countries and Kuwait in particular, yet water crisis is looming in these countries, which are one of the world's regions suffering from water-scarcity. To date, the Arab Gulf countries have relied on fossil-fuel desalination plants for the production of most of the water needed by the rapidly growing population, as well as the growing consumption of water for industrial purposes. Now, these countries are applying cleaner technology and are beginning to exploit the abundant sunlight to produce potable water from the sea.
